MEA warns of thunderstorms and recommends ways to prevent danger from electricity during 25 - 30 Aug 2021

4 January 2022 107

According to the Meteorological Department, the southwest monsoon across the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand is forecast to strengthen. Therefore, more rain is likely over Thailand and heavy rain is expected in some parts of the North, the Northeast, the East and the Southwest Coast. During 25 - 30 Aug 2021, the monsoon trough will slide down over the northern, central and northeastern regions, bringing more rain in those areas and heavy rain in some areas. People living in these affected areas should beware of the dangers of heavy rain and accumulated rainwater which may cause flash floods and runoff. Bangkok and its vicinity will be affected, a 60-70% thunderstorms of the areas.

Mr. Jumpote Himacharoen, Corporate Communications Director, Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), said that MEA has been concerned over the dangers of thunderstorms and strong winds. It is recommended to check the billboard structures to ensure they are strong, stable, and safe and to give more space between billboards and electrical wires as it may affect the power systems and cause outages. Stay away from billboards, large trees, and unsafe buildings near the power lines as the tree branch may break because of wind gust, causing the light pole to fall down or the power lines to break, leading to fatal results. Check your electrical equipment - if you find any damage, get a replacement. Survey your house area to ensure the trees do not rub against the power lines to avoid an outage or electrical leakage due to the tree branch is wet from rain. And make sure you get news alerts and updates on current events.

In preparation for storm season, MEA has mobilized staff to provide proper care and maintenance of the electricity distribution system, to inspect and maintain electrical equipment, and to install power reserves in important venues for 24-hour efficiency, stability and safety.
